One of my mentees sent me a text one Friday that made me pause. Her manager was transitioning to another team, leadership felt uncertain, and she was trying to prepare for whatever might come next. Then she asked a simple question: “Do you happen to have a career transition readiness checklist?”
I did not have one at the time, so I created one.
Career transitions are rarely convenient. Whether the change is expected or sudden, it can bring a mix of uncertainty, urgency, and emotion. Unfortunately, that is also when many people begin trying to update their resumes, remember key accomplishments, gather performance metrics, find important HR documents, and reconnect with professional contacts.
I have been that person, too.
When stress is high, important details can be easy to forget. You may remember that you led a successful project, but not the exact results. You may know that someone offered to be a reference, but realize you never saved their personal contact information. You may need a benefits document, performance review, or compensation statement after you no longer have access to your company systems.
The Career Transition Readiness Checklist was created to help you prepare before you are under pressure. It is not a promise that every transition will be easy, and it is not meant to be the definitive guide to career change. It is a practical starting point that can help you organize your information, document your value, strengthen your relationships, and think through the resources you may need.
My hope is that you never need this checklist because of an unexpected job loss or organizational change. Still, preparation creates options. Taking a few thoughtful steps now can give you greater clarity and confidence if your circumstances change later.
The best time to prepare for a career transition is not when you are already in one. It is before you ever need to be.
